The scientific name of the holy basil or Tulsi plant is Ocimum Sanctum. holy basil or Tulsi is a densely branched evergreen shrub 2/3 feet tall. Its main stem is woody, the leaves are 2-4 cm long. The edges of the leaves are grooved, 5 flower stalks emerge from the tips of the branches and there are flowers in 10-20 layers like an umbrella around each flower stalk. 6 small flowers bloom on each tier. Its leaves, flowers, and fruits have a pungent smell. The Tulsi plant provides a lot of oxygen to the environment, hence it is called an ‘Oxygen Reservoir’.

There are several varieties of holy basil or Tulsi. But there are basically 4 types of holy basil or Tulsi in Bangladesh. These are

    1. White holy basil or Tulsi
    2. Krishna holy basil or Tulsi
    3. Ram holy basil or Tulsi
    4. Baby holy basil or Tulsi
