People widely grow cabbage in home gardens and commercial fields because it is a popular vegetable. However, it can get sick and this can greatly reduce crop yield and even kill the plants.

Cabbage diseases can harm the plant due to fungi, bacteria, viruses, and insects. Some cabbage diseases include blackleg, clubroot, mosaic virus, and whitefly infestations.

Cabbage diseases have different symptoms like yellow leaves, wilting, small growth, and rot. Detecting the disease and taking swift action is vital to stop the proliferation and protect the cabbage harvest.

What are Common Cabbage Diseases and How To Control?

Next, look at these diseases and how to spot and deal with them on your cabbage. Here are five diseases.

1. Cabbage Root Rot Disease:

Causes:

This disease is caused by the fungus Aphanomyces raphani.

Symptoms:

    • You’ll notice water-soaked spots around the affected plant’s base.
    • White fungus may appear at the plant’s base or seeds, resembling mustard-like fungi.
    • Roots rot, causing saplings to collapse and trees to wither.
    • During Satya, when the soil hardens, the disease becomes more common.
    • The disease is soil-borne and spreads through soil, infected plants, and water.

How To Control Root Rot Disease of Cabbage? 

    • Provide moderate irrigation and adequate organic fertilizers and maintain a good drainage system.
    • Apply Mustard Cake at the rate of 1.2 kg/ 435 square feet. This is the best organic fertilizer.
    • Iprodione or carbendazim group fungicides 2 gm per liter of water and sprayed and soaked with soil.
    • Use per 8 kg/ 435 square feet Tricho-compost in the seed bed.
    • Treat the seeds by mixing 2 grams of Carbendazim per kg of seeds before sowing.
    • Apply Dolochun at the rate of four kg percent in case of red soil or acidic soil (once in three years).
    • Before sowing seeds, spread and burn dry wood dust 3 inches thick on the seed bed or in the field.
    • Soil Solarization – Covering the soil with polythene during sunlight.
    • Avoid growing cabbage crops in areas that receive shade for most of the day.

 

2. Cabbage Yellow Virus Disease:

It is one of the common cabbage diseases. This disease affects most cabbage growers.

Causes:

It is a viral disease. Caused by the infestation of virus-carrying insects (Thrips).

Symptoms:

    • If this disease occurs, the leaf turns yellow.
    • Most attacks do not produce edible parts of the plant.

How To Control Cabbage Yellow Virus?

    • Keeping the field clean.
    • Disinfection of used agricultural equipment.
    • Remove affected plants.
    • Sowing seeds early.
    • Use balanced fertilizers.
    • Do not cultivate coppice crops repeatedly on the same land.

 

3. Cabbage Leaf Black Spot Disease:

Symptoms:

    • First, the leaf gets yellow spots and later turns black.
    • If the spots coalesce, the entire leaf is damaged.
    • Disease germs are spread by air.

Measures of Control:

    • Maintain a clean field.
    • Collect and dispose of diseased leaves by burying or burning them.
    • In case of frequent attacks, mix 2 grams of iprodione fungicide per liter of water and spray three times at a 12-day interval.
    • Sowing seeds in advance.
    • Utilize balanced fertilizers.
    • Clean seeds before sowing, and consider mixing 2 grams of iprodione fungicide with every 1 kg of seeds.

 

4. Cabbage Drooping Disease:

Causes:

The fungal attack causes this disease, Fusarium spp.

Symptoms:

    • Brown water-soaked spots near the seedling’s base.
    • Rapid fungus growth in humid and damp conditions.
    • Within 48 hours of the attack, young plants start wilting.
    • Infected areas also display white cotton-like fungus. Additionally, you can observe small seed-like structures.

Measures of Control:

To grow healthy seedlings, use 1 kg of Tricho-compost for every 3 m × 1 m seed bed. 8-10 days before planting the saplings, apply 10-12 kg of Tricho compost fertilizer per 435 sq. ft. to the bed’s soil.

Mix it well with the soil and soak it with irrigation. Ensure the soil is suitable for planting seedlings by turning it over and breaking the clods. Then, plant the seedlings.

To prevent diseases, mix Tricho-leachate with water. Use a ratio of 20 ml per liter. Spray this mixture on plants every 10-15 days. Do this while the plants are growing.

 

5. Alternaria Spot or Blight Disease:

Alternaria brassicae and Alternaria brassicicola cause this disease.

Symptoms:

    • It causes small round spots on the leaves during the middle of the season. The spots are large and light brown round or uneven in shape.
    • The spots appear as a series of rings or concentric circles.
    • Alternaria brassicae attacks the leaves in the late season causing small dark brown or black spots.
    • Cabbage and cauliflower seeds infested with Alternaria develop numerous dark round spots later in the crop.
    • The seed shrivels, reduces the yield, and loses the germinability of the affected seeds.

How To Control Alternaria Bligh Disease? 

    • Burning of the abandoned crop.
    • Cleaning the seeds before seedling. In this case, mix 2 grams of iprodione fungicide with 1 kg of seeds.
    • Adding 30 kg of sulfur and 1 kg of boron per hectare boosts plant disease resistance.
    • You should spray Iprodione fungicide at the rate of 2 grams per liter of water 3 times after 12 days.
